"Founded in 1928 as an outcome of the music conference that was held in conjunction with the All India Congress Session in Madras city the previous year, it was conceived to be the institution that would set the standard for Carnatic music."

At its meeting held today, 24 th July 2016, the Executive Committee of the Music Academy has unanimously chosen the outstanding and versatile violinist,
Kum. A.Kanyakumari, for its coveted “Sangita Kalanidhi” Award and for presiding over the 90 th Annual Conference of the Music Academy to be held from 15 th December 2016 to 1 st January 2017. Kum. Kanyakumari is a top ranking Carnatic violinist whose experience spans over 50 years as an accompanist, soloist and a teacher. She is the first female violinist ever in the history of The Music Academy to have been chosen for the prestigious “Sangita Kalanidhi” Award, which will be conferred on her at the Sadas on 1 st January 2017. The Committee also chose the following persons for the other awards to be conferred at the 90 th Annual Conference and Concerts.

2. T.T.K. Awards: 2

3. Musicologist Award: Dr. Rama Kausalya
The Pappa Venkataramiah Award for violin will be given to Shri Sikkil Baskaran.
The above awards will also be conferred at the Sadas on 1st January 2017.

4. DANCE FESTIVAL: Natya Kala Acharya Award:
The Natya Kala Acharya Award for Dance, would go to the eminent Bharatanatyam Dancer and choreographer, Kum. Malavika Sarukkai. This award will be conferred at the Inaugural function of the Dance Festival on 3 rd January 2017.


Admission for Part time classes 2016

Applications are invited for the following:
Instrumental Classes: Part time (Weekly 2 classes, 6 years course) in Mridangam & Veena.
Violin (5 years Course).
Vocal for Beginners (4 years course) - The Candidates who have the standard of singing Varnams will be eligible for third year.

Registration for both workshops – Rs.100/-
Any one workshop Rs.50/-

Admissions open for I year in the Advanced Diploma in Carnatic Music (Vocal)

Duration: 3 years with 2 semesters every year, Mid July – November end and Mid January – June end

Classes: Monday thru Friday 0800 am – 12:30 pm


Eligibility :

Applicants should have minimum educational qualification of 2 (successfully completed)

Age: 18 to 35 years

Should be able to sing Varnams and Kritis with knowledge of Manodharma Sangita.
Applicants should send their bio-data giving full details of their musical training.
Shortlisted Applicants will be called for an interview by the Academic Council. Selected candidates will be intimated. The decision of the Academic council will be final and binding.

The Annual Spirit of Youth Festival 2016

The Annual Spirit of Youth Festival featuring Music and Dance will be held by the Music Academy Madras from 1st to 10th August 2016 (Age Group – 18 to 25 years). Application forms may be downloaded from the download section.

The applications completed may be sent to the Music Academy. The last date for receipt of completed applications is 30th April 2016.

Contribution to Flood Relief and Rebuilding

The Music Academy has successfully completed 89th Annual Conference and concerts and its 10th dance Festival, reflecting the indomitable spirit of Chennai. The whole Margazhi season was dedicated to the tens of thousands of people of Chennai and neighbouring districts, affected by the unprecedented and devasting floods, during first week of December 2015.
