The aradhana of two greats of Carnatic music occurred in the month of January this year, within a span
of ten days. Commemorative programmes were conducted in their birthplace, mukti-sthala and in
different parts of the world.
The aradhana of Tyagaraja – the incomparable vaggeyakara considered one of the trinity of Carnatic
music, was observed on 18 January 2025 on Pushya Bahula Panchami, while that of Purandaradasa –
described as the Sangita Pitamaha, was held on 28 January 2025 on Pushya Bahula Amavasya.
Here is an interesting article on “A Comparative Study of Tyagaraja and Other Vaggeyakaras” written by
the doyen Sangita Kalanidhi K. Vasudevachar. It was published in 1947, in the Journal of The Music
Academy, Vol. XVIII. It focuses mainly on Tyagaraja and Purandaradasa.
