Title : Accompanying a raga – A percussive perspective

Abstract:

In my 45 years experience of accompanying carnatic music on the percussion instrument mridangam,I have been learning a lot and I have started believing that the raga sound decides the percussive accompaniment. Though the percussive accompaniment is more focused on the taala structure of the compositions,approaching them through the raga sound in that particular composition is very important. That kind of an approach enhances and highlights the greatness of the composition .I also believe that certain gamakas,phrases of that raaga in a kriti can be highlighted with apt approach on the percussion which also includes "silence" I will be explaining that beautiful experience in my lec dem.
