Title : Hindustani raga-s in the karnatik repertory
Abstract :
Indian classical music existed as a unified system once upon a time. The Carnatic and Hindustani music traditions share a deeply interconnected history. Even after Carnatic and Hindustani music traditions developed into two major systems by the influence of other systems of music, they continued to have many common elements. Slowly both music traditions branched out into two highly individual systems. However, there is some bridging element, that sets the two music traditions side by side, influencing each other in a very interesting manner. In the Carnatic repertory, Hindustani ragas are adapted either as glimpses through ragamalika swarakalpana, a flash or deliberate section of raga alapana, a full fledged composition, or as an expansive Ragam Tanam Pallavi. Some ragas from the Hindustani tradition have seeped into Carnatic music so seamlessly that today they are owned as ragas under the Carnatic tradition. In this Panel discussion, we will explore Hindustani Ragas that existed under different names in the Carnatic tradition, allied ragas where melody is similar, Hindustani ragas adopted by composers of the Carnatic music tradition and how Hindustani ragas are adopted in
Javalis in specific. A mention will also be made to the influence of Carnatic music on its Hindustani counterpart. We will also discuss the outcomes of the practical experience of the panelists’ association with Hindustani music. An important part of the discussion will stress on the maintenance of, and adherence to, the core foundations of a genre or system of music, which is the need of the hour.
