Title : Similar Phraseologies in Non-Allied Raga-s
Abstract :
In the tradition of South Indian music, termed the rāga-s that share the similar svara-s or ārōha-avarōha are often referred to as "Allied rāga-s.". Even though there are similar melodic phrases or patterns (prayōga-s) in these rāga-s, the key differences between them typically lie in aspects like the tempo at which they are rendered, the specific gamaka-s (ornamentations) used for the svara-s and other such musical details.
In addition to these allied rāga-s, there are also rāga-s that do not share the same svara-s or ārōha-avarōha, but still exhibit similar phrases or melodic movements (sāncāra-s). These phrases are either seen in the ārōha-avarōha or in the compositions and also in the elements of improvisation (manōdharma saṅgīta).
This lecture demonstration aims to explore and highlight the common melodic phrases that are seen in the non-allied rāga-s, focusing on aspects beyond the shared note structures. The primary focus will be on the phrases that are in common in the rāga-s and apart from which the usage of the phrases in the compositions as well as elements of improvisation, particularly ālāpana (the improvised exposition of a rāga) and kalpana svara (improvised svara sequences), within the context of contemporary musical practice.
