Title : Tala Laya Sampradayam, Jaati, Nadai, Gathi and Jathi

Abstract :

Rhythm is core to Carnatic music, and the detailed structure of rhythm is based on concepts like Jaathi, Gathi, Nadai, and Jathi. These elements of rhythm are therefore the basis of compositional and improvisational activities with an immense potential for aesthetic design. This lecture-demonstration focuses on the different aspects of these terms and their use in the context of Carnatic music. Jaathi refers to the types of thalam and it is based on the beats of laghu and they include Tisra (3), Chatusra (4), Khanda (5), Misra (7) and Sankeerna (9). Gathi, also means the beat of the rhythmic cycle and it determines the number of small beats which are Tisra (3), Chatusra (4), Khanda (5), Misra (7) and Sankeerna (9). Nadai is a term which complements Gathi but on the other hand, it focuses on the within these subdivisions which is the rhythmic texture and the expressive quality of the composition. Besides, Jathi includes ta-ka, ta-ki-ta, and other such rhythmic syllables that can be considered as the patterns from which lice segments of more elaborate patterns are made. The objective of this session is to demonstrate the cohesion between these ideas subsumed in Carnatic rhythm and its architectural beauty. In the present paper, rhythm mastery as an arts exercise and as a particular mathematic experience is explained. It presents the artist perspective and how certain presentation concepts extend and augment the effort involved and the final product.
